Option one: Book an appointment with Student Mental Health Services

Book an appointment

What to expect:

  • This initial meeting will determine the best services to meet your needs. Intake appointments with our Mental Health and Wellness Facilitators (MHWF) are approximately 50 minutes in length.

  • When you call or email Student LifeLine, or fill out our online referral form, one of our Student Support Co-ordinators will offer you an intake appointment. Our hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

  • Kindly fill out and return the forms that are sent to you, and let us know if you’d prefer a telephone, Google Meet video or in-person appointment.

  • When it’s time for your appointment, you will meet with a MHWF who will review our confidentiality and privacy guidelines.

  • After reviewing the guidelines, our MHWF will ask you about your concerns and make recommendations for resources and/or treatment based on the challenges you are having.

  • Where appropriate, our MHWF will follow up with you to ensure the recommendations were helpful.

Option two: Book an appointment with the Campus Health and Wellness Centre (CHWC)

Book an appointment

What to expect:

  •  A Mental Health Needs Assessment is available to Ontario Tech University students who are seeking mental health support and are new to CHWC mental health services, have not accessed services in some time, or are not currently connected with a CHWC nurse or psychotherapist.

  • The assessment is an opportunity to speak with a qualified mental health professional about what you are experiencing and the type of support you may need. Together, you can explore appropriate services, resources, referrals and next steps based on your individual needs.

Distress support sessions

Option one

Book an appointment

What to expect:
  • If you are experiencing emotional distress during business hours, book an appointment, email studentlifeline@ontariotechu.ca or call the Student LifeLine at 905.721.3392.

  • Let the Student Support Co-ordinator know that you would like to book a "distress support appointment". It is possible that you may be offered an appointment within 24 to 72 hours.

  • Distress support sessions are shorter appointments focused on your current concerns or feelings of being overwhelmed.

  • There are some days that appointments may not be available due to staff training, events, meetings or other circumstances.

  • If you are new to Student Mental Health Services, the Student Support Co-ordinator will email you some intake and consent forms to fill out and return.

  • Your counsellor will connect with you at your appointment time, using the communication method you have selected.

Option two

  • If you are experiencing significant emotional distress or a mental health crisis and feel that you require more immediate support, you may walk into the Campus Health and Wellness Centre and speak with a member of our team.

Our team will assess your needs and the urgency of your concerns to determine the most appropriate next steps. Same-day support is based on clinical need, the circumstances of each request and service availability and cannot be guaranteed.

Student Mental Health and the Campus Health and Wellness Centre are not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, are at imminent risk of harming yourself or someone else, or require urgent medical attention, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
