Leadership Foundations

Leadership Foundations is a stand-alone, one-time leadership course. Completing Leadership Foundations gives you base knowledge of being a leader at Ontario Tech University. With modules on the topics of: leadership, community, communication, equity, reflection, and cultural safety, those that complete Leadership Foundations in its entirety are set on a path to success in any leadership role they acquire. 

Topics include:

  • Building trust and fostering meaningful team connection

  • Communication tools, warm referrals, and “what to say” scripts

  • Cultural safety, local context, and reconciliation-oriented actions

  • Equity-informed practices, bias-interruptor language, and bystander moves

  • Everyday leadership and practical styles

  • Personality styles—strengths, watch-outs, and real-world application

Come the end of the academic year, those that have completed the full course will automatically have Leadership Foundations added to their Student Experience Record (SER).

More About Leadership Foundations

  • Course Format

    Leadership Foundations is an entirely asynchronous course hosted through the Canvas platform.

    Completing the course should take approximately 2 to 4 hours and can be completed in multiple sittings. 

  • Who should enrol in Leadership Foundations?

    Anyone associated with Ontario Tech University is welcome to enrol; staff, students and faculty alike. 

    Certain programs require Leadership Foundations to participate in. Programs that require Leadership Foundations include:

    • International Student Leader

    • Nursing Students with a placement in Student Engagement and Equity

    • Orientation Leaders

    • Peer Mentor Program (if Level 1 Ambassador training has not been completed)

    • Sustainability Champion

  • Enrol in Leadership Foundations

    Enrolling in Leadership Foundations is as simple as navigating to the course catalog option on Canvas. Search "Leadership Foundations” in the search bar to enrol.
