Registration
As you begin your university journey, you may be unfamiliar with commonly used terms that come up during the registration process and on your class schedule(s). Familiarize yourself with commonly used terms below:
Asynchronous
Asynchronous learning allows you to learn on your own schedule, within a certain timeframe. You can access and complete lectures, readings, homework and other learning materials at any time. Your professor/instructor provides these materials ahead of time and will guide you through assessements and provide feedback as needed.
LEC
The short form for lecture/lectures. This class format typically includes an instructor who is presenting content on the given subject.
LAB
A term used for laboratory/laboratories. Labs are typically smaller groups that involve a demonstration, experiment or analysis. Labs will often require a formal write up of your results.
Synchronous
Synchronous learning means that although you will be learning virtually, you will still attend class at a scheduled time each week and at the same time as your instructor and classmates. This can be done through platforms such as Google Meet or Kaltura Virtual Classroom. You'll receieve all class information and lecture/meeting links, though Canvas. If you're new to synchronous learning, there are several resourses on how to use these online platforms.
TUT
The short form for tutorials. Tutorials often have smaller class settings that go over the lecture content in greater detail. They often include discussions, or questions and answers that the teaching assistants work through to help you understand the overall content of the course.
